On March 1, 2024, the first of 29 Airbus A220 jet aircraft ordered by Australia’s Qantas took off for its inaugural commercial flight, sporting a very unique color scheme. A leading Indigenous Australian design agency, Balarinji has worked with Qantas to create the fuselage design for all of the Flying Art Series liveries to date, collaborating with First Nations artists and their families. This latest creation on QantasLink’s state-of-the-art Airbus A220 continues this special artistic partnership. Born in 1952 in the remote community of Kanpi in South Australia, Maringka Baker began painting in order to tell her ancestral stories relating to travel, women’s ceremonial business, family connections and traditional lands. Maringka is recognised as one of Australia’s most accomplished artists and is credited with inspiring a new generation of First Nations artists. The livery tells the Dreaming story of two sisters who traverse Australia together, covering vast distances to find their way home. The aircraft has been named after the artwork: Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa – The Two Sisters Creation Story.
