Since its founding in Pittsburgh back in 1937 as a mail delivery service, the airline had rebranded and grown: from All American Aviation to Allegheny Airlines, to USAir, following the purchase of Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) and Piedmont, and ultimately rebranding as US Airways in 1997. By the early 2010’s, the airline had grown into a major carrier with over 340 jets and additionally more than 270 regional aircraft operated under the US Airways Express brand, and was also the largest operator of Airbus aircraft in the world. In 2013, US Airways was merged into American Airlines, becoming one of a number of airlines now part of the heritage of today’s American Airlines. To commemorate this heritage, the Dallas, Texas-based carrier has repainted several aircraft in the colors of different historical airlines, such as this Airbus A321 in the last color scheme of US Airways, or also another A321 in the bright colors of Pacific Southwest Airlines, also recently announced in the 1/500 scale (item no. 538244).
