On September 26, 2024, the last two KC-10 Extenders, among them the trijet with the serial number 86-0031, left Travis Air Force Base heading out on its final flight to the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group in neighboring Arizona, where retired aircraft are mothballed, recycled and/or disposed of. Since 1980, the KC-10 had been a crucial asset for U.S. and allied forces, flying airlift and aerial refueling missions across the globe. Often referred to as the “Gucci-10” because of its comfortable and spacious interior compared to other military aircraft, the KC-10 could carry twice as much fuel as the older KC-135 and at the same time almost as much cargo as the C-17 Globemaster. To commemorate its retirement, Herpa is releasing a small three-model, limited-edition series of the trijet in spring and summer of 2025. The first model sports the insignia of the 60th Air Mobility Wing, the final U.S Air Force unit to operate the Extender.
